Nimmi was born to Sri Lankan parents, but grew up in the UK. Having done her BA(Hons.) in Drama, Theatre Arts from Goldsmiths College in London, Nimmi was also awarded a scholarship to participate in an acting in film workshop at the New York Film Academy. She now divides her time between London and Colombo.
Nimmi plays a leading role in Prasanna Vithanage’s latest film “Akasa Kusum” (Flowers of the Sky). This is the first time a Sri Lankan film has been picked by an American company for distribution. The film, which won Malini Fonseka the coveted Silver Peacock Award at the 39 Indian International Film Festival in Goa, will be released in Sri Lankan theatres in July 2009. “Akasa Kusum” also won a Jury Special Mention at the Vesoul International Film Festival in France and is currently being exhibited in the world festival circuit.
Main Actress in Ira Madiyama (August Sun) by Prasanna Vithanage. Prasanna's new film, which he says will be a totally new experience for local film goers, is set in the mid 1990s with the country's prolonged war as the background. The film will unfold during two scorching days in August - during which time three different groups of people face totally different experiences due to circumstances beyond their control.
